Send-In Bench Flashing is the only method to Power Flash the 2021RR Models. Late-model '21 and 2022 ECU's can ONLY be unlocked and flashed through EVP directly.
Late Model = Manufacture Date of Nov 2020 or Later
Early Model = Manufacture Date of Jul - Oct 2020
After Flashing and the EVP ECU Unlock is performed, the Can Am Diagnostic Software Tool (BUDs tool used by Dealers) will NOT be able to flash the ECU. This is by design so that the dealer cannot relock the ECU. If a Dealer flashes the ECU using a BUDs tool after our Unlock and flash has been performed, the ECU will get relocked and thus will need to be shipped back to our Wisconsin facility to have another MG1 Unlock process performed. All other BUDs functions will still work.
Why choose an EVP Unlock and Power Flash vs a standalone ECU? Some companies are now offering a cheap standalone ECU replacement of the OEM MG1 ECU. While standalone ECUs are great for very big horsepower applications and race fuel, they are not so great for stock turbo or even mod turbo applications. The reason is, the OEM Can Am Bosch MG1 is absolutely the most advanced ECU available today, and is installed on the latest Audi, BMW and Porsche vehicles. The ECU strategy has been designed to target a torque value and maintain that torque no matter what as long as there is no harmful detonation or pre-ignition. What this means is when the vehicle is run hard with high intake temperatures and coolant temperatures, the ECU will compensate and add more boost so it maintains the torque target. With standalones, you set a boost target and typically this is the highest boost/power you will ever see. The standalone ECU safety strategy (if the tuner has even employed a safety strategy) will typically reduce ignition timing and/or boost according to intake and coolant temperatures. These ignition/boost reductions are set by the tuner. This means that when the vehicle is cool, it will make maximum power, but when it is warmed up, power typically falls off. Not so with the OEM Can Am MG1. Also, some standalones do not utilize the knock sensor or the wideband lambda sensor (AFR sensor) that is built in to the Ace 900 engine. Even if they do, again this is up to the tuner to set these parameters. Unless the tuner has an OEM quality laboratory/engine dyno with per cylinder engine harmonics mapped out, it is highly doubtful they could ever match the safety features built into the OEM ECU. Lastly, not all standalone ECUs are created equal. Like in all things, you get what you pay for. A cheap Standalone ECU means relatively underdeveloped firmware package and hardware that does not employ advanced safety features.

The Stage 5 X85 is equipped with the same injectors and adapters as the Stage 4 X100 but also includes a High Flow Fuel Pump Upgrade (direct replacement). The EVP High Flow Fuel Pump is necessary due to the high fuel volume that E85 fuel requires. E85 tunes require ~30% more fuel than a similar gasoline tune. The OEM fuel pump capacity is approximately 155 liters per hour which is right on the edge of being able to supply enough fuel volume to maintain the correct air fuel ratio. The OEM pump simply cannot keep up as evidenced by Injector duty which spikes well past 100% and the air fuel mixture leaning out due to insufficient fuel supply. The EVP 265 liter-per-hour pump can be used with all stock turbo tunes, as it does not raise the base fuel pressure, so if you want to change between the Stage 4 X100 or even the stock injector tunes, there is no need to remove it once installed. It also has enough overhead for our Big Turbo Kits up to 350 horsepower. Additionally, the 2021 Stage 5 X85 tunes are compatible with a wider variety of ethanol blends than previous year versions due to the 2021RR having wide band lambda as part of the OEM sensor package. This allows the fuel to be trimmed or added in real time. Blends from E70 all the way to E90 are no problem with our 2021 RR Stage X85 upgrade.
BEHIND OUR DEVELOPMENT
When we develop our ECU calibrations, we engineer them based on our real world testing and how we ride and race. Insatiable when it comes to development, our process starts out with over 200+ dyno runs in our state-of-the-art, climate-controlled Dyno Room.
We then field test on trails, desert, dunes and high altitude for driveability and long-term durability. We also run in the 110+ degree California weather to ensure performance at extreme temperatures. After the rigorous field-testing route is completed, they are further proven and refined on the track through our EVP race teams and Sponsored Racers.

Tuning the 2021+ turbo RR
The new Bosch/Rotax ECU completely revolutionizes the tuning strategy which allowed us to achieve maximum power, safety and drivability of the 2021+ X3 RR. These tunes were developed in our state-of-the-art Wisconsin laboratory/dyno facility. Advanced data acquisition has allowed us to accurately measure power gains, knock, air fuel ratios, airflow calculations, etc to ensure performance gains and monitor vital engine functions.
All of our 2021 (and newer) RR calibrations are based on the latest “138552” software update which fixes the battery voltage issue. When the EVP power flash is installed, it is done with this latest software logic so there is no need for the dealer to have to perform this update after the flash.
the process
1
IN HOUSE IN WI
The 2021 X3RR XCU software calibrations were developed in our state-of-the-art Wisconsin laboratory/dyno facility over the last 6 months. Advanced data acquisition has allowed us to accurately measure power gains, knock, air fuel ratios, airflow calculations, etc to ensure performance gains and monitor vital engine functions. After we were satisfied with the dyno gains and engine data for both the Stage 3R (91 octane) and Stage 3R (93 octane), we headed to Glamis, CA for a round of rigorous field testing.
2
GLAMIS - OLDSMOBILE
One of our (4) development 2021 X3RR vehicles was trailered to Glamis, California for its first round of hot weather torture testing.
Our dune testing regimen consisted of back-to-back hot laps up Oldsmobile hill to acquire data which we then analyzed to ensure safe engine operating parameters.
3
GLAMIS - DRAGS
Next, we unplugged the intercooler fan to force ridiculously high intake temperatures which the engine had to endure multiple hot laps. After this data was analyzed, the vehicle was taken to the sand drags and hot lapped for 25+ miles again and again up and down never giving the cars a chance to cool down.
4
0-60'S
After compiling the engine data and reviewing, we then used our Draggy to do zero to sixty times in the sand to ensure performance was translating from the dyno to the field.
The results were impressive and even more impressive is the fact that ALL testing was completed on a BONE stock X3 with 100% stock exhaust in place.
5
ENGINE INSPECTIONS
After Glamis, we transported the car to Phoenix and performed mechanical engine inspections with compression and leak down tests. The car was then loaded up and brought back to Glamis where we let our friends at Jeffries Performance perform their own independent tests of the car. They performed their own rigorous barrage of torture testing with miles of sand drag hot laps as well as aggressive dune driving and hill climbing. They then performed the same mechanical compression and leak down tests of the engine which were identical to previous tests.
6
MOAB
The car was then loaded up and brought to Moab to test at a higher elevation in different types of terrain. Not all of our customers will dune ride their vehicles so testing on open trails and technical maneuvers was done to ensure throttle responsiveness is improved without being too aggressive.
