Can-Am/XPS Lubricants/Chaney Racing driver Kyle Chaney swept the 2019 opening weekend of the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League, winning both UTV Modified races. The events were held at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in Wisconsin.
Armed with a Can-Am Maverick X3 newly built by CT Raceworx and tuned by Evolution Powersports, Chaney was virtually unstoppable during the weekend. Qualifying was rained out on day one and Chaney randomly drew a second-to-last (29th) starting spot. Not to be denied, Chaney drove through the field, taking the lead for good just after the midway competition caution. “I knew it was going to be tough work when they put at the back at the start; it’s always hard to pass out here with all of the fast guys but we made it work,” said Chaney. “It was a great day and a good run. The Maxxis Tires had me on rails out there. CT Raceworx took 80 lbs out of this car and it was obvious and Evolution Powersports gave me the power I needed to run down the competition. Any time there is a random draw, I draw last. I think they just like the show!”
On the second day, Chaney started sixth due to the inversion. Slick conditions prevailed but Chaney rode the cushion and again took the lead just after the midpoint of the race. “I had to pick my passes carefully,” explained Chaney. “By the time I caught up the leader it was the halfway caution. I followed him for a couple laps and set him up in the finish line corner. I’m super happy to extend my points lead and have a nice cushion going into ERX.”
Can-Am X3s swept both podiums and Evolution Powersports tuned cars finishing in 4 of the top 5 spots.

Chaney now holds the points lead going into the next event. This is unknown territory for Chaney. In the past, he had to play catch up for most of the season after a slow start. He appreciates the strong start to the year. “We usually start the year out slowly so it’s nice to have two wins to kick off the season,” said Chaney. “The Can-Am ran flawlessly all weekend. The car worked so well I really don’t think I’ll change anything before the next race.”
Chaney returns to Midwest Short Course competition when the series heads to ERX Motor Park in Elk River, MN July 12-13.
